GRAND FORKS — Reed Johnson has announced his candidacy for a seat in the North Dakota House of Representatives.

Johnson, a Republican, made the announcement Thursday morning, Feb. 5, in a release sent to the Grand Forks Herald. The release said Johnson intends to emphasize "a community-first platform focused on local priorities, economic growth and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars."

Johnson is a Dickinson native and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was an armor officer in the Army. During the past session of the Legislature, he worked in Gov. Kelly Armstrong's office analyzing legislation, testifying before committees and providing legal counsel. The release announcing his candidacy said Johnson "brings professional experience in strategic consulting, specializing in human resources, including talent acquisition, leadership development and end-to-end HR technology implementation for Fortune 500 companies."

He is in his final year of law school at UND, with plans to graduate in May.

"Grand Forks has given my family incredible opportunities, and I'm running because I care deeply about the kind of community and state my children will grow up in," Johnson said in the statement sent to the media. "Working alongside Gov. Armstrong, I saw firsthand the importance of having solutions-driven legislators. Whether it was passing historic property tax relief, landmark cellphone-free classrooms legislation or streamlining government by eliminating unneeded boards and commissions, North Dakotans expect their citizen-legislators to listen and work on their behalf."

He said he is running to "fight for policies that keep our state headed in the right direction, grow our economy and protect our way of life." He also wants to continue efforts to reduce property taxes and to strengthen small business and the state's industrial environment. He strongly supports UND, the announcement said, as well as the state and regional economy.

He is married, with a stepson and baby girl on the way.
